Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
We clean and service Guardsman registers and grilles throughout Las Vegas, with most homes running between $45 and $95 per register depending on size, finish, and how much desert dust has worked its way into the louvers. Most jobs are completed the same visit, since we carry the brushes, fin combs, and cleaning solutions on the truck. The typical call starts when a homeowner notices the register won’t hold position anymore, the damper wheel has seized, or a coat of baked-on dust has turned white grilles that Las Vegas tan color you can’t scrub off with a rag.
Kestrel Air Duct Las Vegas is an independent service provider. We’re not affiliated with Guardsman, but we clean and service their registers and grilles every week, and we keep the common replacement parts in stock.
Which Guardsman Models This Applies To
Guardsman registers and grilles come in three main series: the stamped-steel economy line, the mid-range adjustable-louver series, and the heavy-gauge commercial-grade units with reinforced damper assemblies. The mid-range series is the one we see most often in Las Vegas homes, usually in 4×10, 4×12, and 6×12 sizes for wall and ceiling mounts. The gotcha: Guardsman changed their damper wheel design around 2018, so older registers with the smooth plastic wheel need a different replacement stem than the newer knurled-metal version. If you’re ordering parts yourself, the series number is stamped on the back edge of the frame, usually near one corner.
For OEM versus aftermarket: Guardsman OEM registers are well-built, but the aftermarket equivalents from Hart & Cooley and Accord carry the same gauge steel and powder-coat finish for roughly 20% less. We stock both and will tell you straight which one makes sense for your situation. If your existing grille is still square and the louvers aren’t bent, cleaning plus a replacement damper assembly usually beats a full register swap.

Signs Your Guardsman Register & Grille Cleaning Is Failing
- Louvers won’t hold position. The friction tabs inside the frame have worn smooth, usually after years of daily adjustment in Las Vegas’s dry air. The register still moves air, but you’ve lost directional control.
- Damper wheel spins without engaging. The plastic-to-metal connection between the wheel and the damper blade has stripped. This is the single most common failure we see on Guardsman registers older than six years.
- Baked-on dust that won’t wipe off. This isn’t just cosmetic. Las Vegas dust is fine and alkaline, and it bonds to powder-coat over time. Once it’s set, household cleaners just smear it around; it takes a fin comb and a pH-neutral cleaner to cut it without damaging the finish.
- Whistling or rattling at certain airflow settings. Warped damper blades, sometimes from heat exposure in unconditioned attics, create uneven airflow. The noise is the register itself, not the duct.
- Visible rust on the frame or louvers. In Las Vegas, rust usually means the register was installed where condensation collects, often a bathroom ceiling or a supply run near the evaporator coil. The register needs replacement before the rust migrates into the surrounding drywall.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what we charge in Las Vegas for Guardsman register and grille work:
- Deep cleaning of an existing register (in place): $45 to $65 per register, including removal, fin combing, solution cleaning, and reinstallation
- Damper assembly replacement: $35 to $55 per register, parts included, depending on the series and wheel type
- Full register replacement: $75 to $95 per register installed, using OEM Guardsman or a quality aftermarket equivalent we show you before we install it
- Multi-register service call: We discount per-register labor when we’re already on-site doing duct cleaning or working through multiple registers
The price you’re quoted is the price on the invoice. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee at work: written price before work begins, arrival window honored, job site left clean. Every register we install or rebuild carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing. If the damper seizes or the louver won’t hold within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
Dale Whitmore still reviews every register job checklist before a crew closes out the call. It’s a habit he picked up early and never dropped, and it’s one reason our callback rate on register work is so low.
DIY or Call Us?
Cleaning a Guardsman register yourself is doable if you’ve got a screwdriver, warm water, mild dish soap, and patience. Remove the register, soak it, brush the louvers with a soft-bristle brush, and let it dry completely before reinstalling. What we’d caution against: replacing a damper assembly requires matching the stem type to the series, and forcing the wrong stem can crack the frame. Using abrasive cleaners or scouring pads will strip the powder-coat, and then you’re buying a new register anyway. If the register is in a ceiling above a staircase or high wall, or if any electrical or duct modification is involved, call us at (725) 210-0612. We’ll bring the right parts and the right ladder.
FAQs
In a normal Las Vegas home, expect 8 to 12 years from a Guardsman register before the damper assembly or louver friction tabs begin to fail. Units in bathrooms, near evaporator coils, or in unconditioned attic spaces may fail sooner due to moisture and heat. If you’re past the 10-year mark and adjusting dampers twice a year, plan on a replacement. Call (725) 210-0612 for an exact assessment, free.
Yes, in most cases the damper assembly, wheel, and friction tabs can be replaced individually while keeping the existing frame and louvers, which saves money and keeps the finish matched to the rest of the house. We stock the common Guardsman stem and wheel types on the truck. If the frame itself is bent or rusted through, replacement is the honest call. Call (725) 210-0612 and we’ll tell you which path makes sense for your register.
A single register cleaning takes about 20 minutes on site. A damper replacement takes 30 to 45 minutes. A full multi-register service through an average Las Vegas home takes two to three hours, and we schedule it in a defined arrival window, not an all-day “sometime between 8 and 5” slot. Call (725) 210-0612 to get on the schedule with a written price first.
We stock the common Guardsman series in 4×10, 4×12, and 6×12 sizes, plus the damper stems, wheels, and friction tab kits for the pre-2018 and post-2018 designs. For odd sizes like 2×14 or angled baseboard returns, we order directly from our supplier and usually have the part within three to five business days. We also work with registers and grilles from Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems when the home has mixed equipment. Call (725) 210-0612 and we’ll confirm what’s on the truck before we head your way.
