That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Nikro Coil Cleaning: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide

If you own a Nikro extraction unit in Las Vegas, coil cleaning is not a suggestion: it’s what keeps your machine pulling the desert dust instead of just pushing it around. We stock Nikro-compatible coil cleaning kits and replacement coils on the truck, and a full coil service on a portable Nikro negative-air unit typically runs $95 to $185 installed, depending on your model and how cooked the existing coil is. Most Las Vegas owners discover the problem the hard way: the unit runs but the pull at the register drops off, the motor runs hotter than it should, or the coils look like they’ve been dipped in pancake batter. You’re on this page because that moment arrived. Here’s exactly what to do about it.

Which Nikro Models This Applies To

Most Nikro negative-air and extraction units use one of two coil configurations: the single-coil setup on the smaller portable units and the dual-coil stack on the larger truck-mount and industrial machines. The quickest way to identify what you have is to check the data plate on the back of the housing. Nikro stamps a model prefix: units starting with “VI” or “V” typically run the 12-inch single coil, while the “HD” and “T” series machines use the 18-inch dual-stack. If the plate is faded, measure the coil face: 12 inches square versus 18 inches wide tells us most of what we need to know before we even see the machine.

Compatibility gotcha worth knowing: Nikro changed the coil mounting tab spacing on their 2015-and-newer portable units. An older aftermarket coil will slide into the housing and look right, but the tabs won’t line up with the frame screws, and you’ll get coil rattle under load. We see this at least twice a month in Las Vegas, usually from owners who ordered a “universal” coil online and then fought the thing for an afternoon. The Nikro OEM coils are made with a heavier-gauge aluminum fin than most aftermarket options, which matters here: dry desert air and fine dust load the fins differently than humid climates, and the cheaper thin-fin coils warp within a season or two. For our money, OEM Nikro coils or the premium aftermarket units built to Nikro spec are the only two we’ll install.

Signs Your Nikro Coil Cleaning Is Failing

  • The unit runs loud but pulls weak. When the coil is plugged, the fan creates pressure but can’t move air volume. You hear the motor working, but the gauge at the intake reads low and the dust just hangs in the room instead of flowing toward the inlet. That’s classic coil starvation.
  • The motor casing is too hot to touch for more than a second. A restricted coil makes the motor work against a wall, and heat builds fast. In a Las Vegas garage in July, an already-hot coil turns a simple restriction into a meltdown risk. If the housing feels like a griddle, shut it down and get the coil checked.
  • The coils are dark, greasy, or look wet even when dry. Coil fins in this climate trap dust and oil vapor together, and the result is a varnish that regular brushing won’t touch. You’ll see it first on the intake side of the coil, where the air hits first.
  • The machine trips a breaker or GFCI intermittently. A hot motor draws more current. If your unit never tripped anything before and now does it on warm days, the coil loading is the likely suspect, not the panel.
  • You’re changing pre-filters twice as often with worse results. When the coil stopped catching what it should, the cheap pre-filters upstream are doing all the work. You burn through them faster, and the air still isn’t clean. That’s the coil telling you it’s done.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Las Vegas, a Nikro coil cleaning and replacement job runs $95 to $185 installed, and that range covers the two realities we see most: a coil that’s still structurally sound and just needs a deep chemical clean, or a coil that’s warped, corroded, or so loaded that replacement is the honest call. The lower end is typically a single 12-inch coil clean on a portable unit. The higher end is a dual-coil replacement on a larger machine, which doubles both the parts cost and the labor time.

Every coil job includes removal of the coil stack, chemical soaking and fin straightening where the coil is salvageable, a new OEM-spec coil where it isn’t, reassembly, and a run test with a static pressure reading so you can see the improvement in numbers, not just a tech’s opinion. The price is the price: we hand it to you in writing before anything comes apart, and that’s the Kingswell Guarantee on every job. If the coil fails or the unit underperforms within a year, we return and make it right at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s in writing on your invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do two things before calling anyone: kill the power at the switch and the breaker, then visually inspect the coil through the access panel. If it’s light gray with dust, a gentle vacuum with a soft brush attachment may buy you a few more weeks. If it’s dark, greasy, or bent, stop there.

Where DIY goes wrong is the chemical stage. Coil cleaners are caustic, the fins are sharp enough to open a finger to the bone, and reassembling a Nikro housing with a misaligned gasket turns your negative-air unit into an air leak machine. We’ve also seen owners strip the mounting tabs using the wrong screws, which turns a $125 coil job into a housing replacement. If the coil is more than a season old in Las Vegas conditions, call us at (725) 210-0612 and we’ll bring the right coil, the right cleaner, and the right gasket the first time.
